Capturing Value in Mosaic

What I think works about this piece is not just the colors, but in the value of the colors as well. I did a simple drawing in colored pencil (see below), taking notice to go light in coloring here, and darker in colors there. Simple. In a drawing, we learned this is 2nd grade.
Then I took a Gray-Scale Finder, a painter’s tool that shows the 10-step gradation of black from Mars Black to Ivory White. I labelled the areas in my drawing according to this scale, and found the corresponding values in the glass I wanted to make this dragonfly exactly as I drew. Geez, I got to do this more often!!
